Costa: Attacks on Kyiv show Russia’s escalating attack strategy
Brussels, June 15 (Hibya) – European Council President Antonio Costa stated that Russia is not moving closer to the peace process following the attacks on Kyiv and called on G7 countries to increase pressure on Moscow.
Costa made a statement regarding the intense overnight bombardments targeting civilians in Kyiv and the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Costa said the attacks demonstrate that Russia continues to escalate tensions and is not showing a genuine willingness to engage in serious peace negotiations.
The statement underlined that Russia’s current stance indicates it is not moving toward peace talks and emphasized the importance of increasing international pressure.
Stating that “Time is not on Russia’s side,” Costa said that options for increasing pressure on Russia would be discussed at the G7 leaders’ summit taking place today in Evian-les-Bains, France.
It was noted that new measures aimed at bringing Moscow to the negotiating table for a just and lasting peace in Ukraine would be evaluated during the meeting.
