Danish Foreign Minister Rasmussen: A unilateral decision is not in the country’s interest
Copenhagen, 7 December (Hibya) – Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen criticized Denmark’s plan to unilaterally withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), stating that a decision taken without internal government discussion would not benefit the country or the issue at hand.
Foreign Minister Rasmussen made remarks regarding Denmark’s plan to withdraw from the ECHR unilaterally. Rasmussen emphasized that taking such a step without prior debate within the government would not be appropriate.
He stated that, at a time when the international legal order is under threat and European Union (EU) countries generally support Denmark’s migration policies, acting unilaterally serves neither the country’s interests nor the matter itself.
Rasmussen underlined that it is important for Denmark to maintain an approach that is both open and preserves national control, as this is essential for the country’s interests.
