Gerapetritis: Peace is a moral, political and humanitarian necessity for the Middle East
New York, 28 January (Hibya) – Greek Foreign Minister Yorgos Gerapetritis said in his address to the United Nations (UN) Security Council that “peace is a moral, political and humanitarian necessity for the Middle East.”
Greek Foreign Minister Gerapetritis addressed the UN Security Council’s open debate on the situation in the Middle East in New York on 28 January 2026.
Stating that Greece is carrying out its mandate on the Security Council “with a clear purpose and a strong sense of responsibility,” Gerapetritis said, “The United Nations, and especially the Security Council, remains an indispensable framework for international peace and security.”
Referring to Gaza, Gerapetritis said, “We supported the comprehensive plan to end the conflict in Gaza and voted in favor of Security Council Resolution 2803.” Welcoming progress toward a ceasefire, he added, “The next phase must include the complete disarmament of Hamas and other armed groups.”
Emphasizing that “Gaza and the West Bank constitute a single and indivisible territorial unit for the future Palestinian state,” Gerapetritis stressed that the two-state solution is the only viable path. He noted that Greece is ready to increase humanitarian and development assistance to Gaza and the West Bank, adding, “We will continue to provide medical care to children from Gaza in Greek hospitals.”
Touching on Lebanon, Gerapetritis said, “Lebanon is not alone,” welcoming progress made in the disarmament process. On Syria, he stated, “Syria’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity must be fully respected.”
Highlighting the importance of maritime security in the Red Sea, Gerapetritis said, “Greece is determined to continue its leading role within the framework of the European Union’s ‘Aspides’ naval operation.”
He concluded by saying, “Greece will continue to be a reliable and constructive partner for dialogue, de-escalation and lasting peace.”
