Australian sinologist Colin Mackerras set foot in China in 1964 as an English teacher. Since then, Mackerras has visited China more than 60 times.

Chinese President Xi Jinping praised Professor Mackerras in 2014 during his speech to the Australian Parliament for his significant contributions to friendship and mutual understanding between the two countries. This praise was a great honor for Mackerras.

Since his first visit to China nearly 60 years ago, Mackerras has maintained his interest and enthusiasm for China and the Chinese people. Mackerras described the complete elimination of poverty in China as a "remarkable achievement."
