Trump moves Russia-Ukraine ceasefire deadline to August 8
Washington, July 30 (Hibya) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday set a 10-day deadline for Russia to reach a ceasefire agreement with Ukraine.
On Monday in Scotland, Trump said he had shortened the 50-day deadline previously given to Russia to make peace with Ukraine. On Tuesday, while returning to the U.S. aboard Air Force One, he spoke to reporters about the revised timeline. Trump had been in Scotland for the past five days to negotiate trade deals with European leaders and visit his two golf resorts.
“Ten days from today. All right?” Trump said on the plane.
Referring apparently to Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump said: “And then, you know, we’ll impose tariffs and stuff. I don’t know if that’ll affect Russia, maybe he wants to keep fighting. But we’ll put on tariffs and the various things you mentioned. That may affect them or not — but maybe it will.”
The U.S. and Ukraine are pressing for an urgent ceasefire to begin negotiations on a lasting peace agreement. Earlier in July, Trump had warned that if Russia did not agree to a ceasefire within 50 days, the U.S. would impose secondary tariffs of up to 100% on goods sold by countries trading with Russia.
Trump is increasingly expressing frustration with Putin, questioning whether the Russian leader truly wants to end the war with Ukraine. He said he thought they had a good phone call, but the next day learned that more Ukrainians had been killed by Russia.
