Trump told Netanyahu that Iran nuclear talks must continue
Washington, February 12 (Hibya) - U.S. President Donald Trump insisted on the continuation of talks with Iran during his meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu but warned that he could take action against Tehran if a nuclear deal was not reached.
With tensions continuing to rise in the Middle East and negotiations intensifying over curbing Iran's nuclear weapons program, the leaders met at the White House.
Netanyahu was expected to pressure Trump for an agreement that would not only halt Iran's uranium enrichment but also reduce its ballistic missile program and its support for proxy groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.
Iran indicated that it was willing to limit its nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, but rejected other demands.
Before the White House meeting, Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian warned that his country "would not submit to excessive demands."
Netanyahu's visit was his sixth to the U.S. since Trump returned to office — more than any other world leader.
The leaders met in an unusually simple three-hour meeting, with Netanyahu being ushered in through a side door, out of the view of cameras.
Trump did not hold a press conference with Netanyahu after the meeting.
On Truth Social, Trump wrote that the meeting between the two leaders was "very good."
"No final conclusion was reached except for my insistence that talks continue with Iran and see if a deal can be reached," he said. "A deal is preferred, but if one cannot be reached, we will see what happens."
Netanyahu's office said the leaders discussed "Israel's security needs in the context of the talks" and agreed to "maintain close coordination and relations."
