Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced that Ukraine has been elected to the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term.
In a statement on social media, Sybiha thanked all UN member states that supported Ukraine's candidacy. He noted that Ukraine is joining the Council while continuing to defend its people and sovereignty against Russia's ongoing aggression, which he said has resulted in grave violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.
Sybiha stated that during its membership on the Council, Ukraine would prioritize holding those responsible for these violations accountable and support international mechanisms for documenting and investigating abuses. He also said Ukraine would advocate for the protection of prisoners of war and unlawfully detained civilians and continue efforts to bring back Ukrainian children who have been deported or forcibly displaced.
Drawing on its own experiences, Ukraine will work with its partners to strengthen accountability, defend human dignity and reinforce the international human rights system, Sybiha said. He added that addressing emerging human rights challenges around the world would also be among Ukraine's objectives.
