Ukraine reacts to decision on Russian and Belarusian athletes
Kyiv, April 15 (Hibya) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine strongly criticized World Aquatics’ decision to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete again under their national flags and anthems.
In its statement, the ministry said the decision effectively lifts sanctions by restoring full participation rights for Russian and Belarusian athletes in swimming, diving, artistic swimming and water polo. The decision was described as “shameful.” The Ukrainian side emphasized that more than 650 Ukrainian athletes and coaches have lost their lives due to Russia’s war against Ukraine, and more than 800 sports facilities have been destroyed.
The statement also noted that Ukrainian athletes continue to train under the threat of missile and drone attacks, adding that it is unacceptable to reinvite representatives of a state that targets sports infrastructure to international competitions under their national flags. The Ministry stressed that sports sanctions against Russia and Belarus must remain in force as long as the attacks continue.
