UNESCO adopts decision in favor of Palestine regarding destruction in Gaza
Ramallah, April 23 (Hibya) – The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adopted a decision in favor of Palestine at its 224th session.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that UNESCO’s Executive Board unanimously adopted a decision in favor of Palestine, highlighting the destruction in the fields of education, culture, and media in Gaza.
The statement said: “The decision focuses on monitoring the implementation of UNESCO decisions regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip.”
It was noted that “Israeli attacks have caused extensive destruction to hundreds of schools, universities, and cultural heritage sites in Gaza.”
It was also emphasized that “journalists and media workers face serious risks, which constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law and UNESCO principles.”
The statement also included assessments by Palestine’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Ambassador Adel Attiya, noting that “the unanimous adoption of the decision is welcomed and highlights the scale of the humanitarian, cultural, and educational crisis in Gaza.”
It added that “the ongoing war in Gaza has largely destroyed daily life, the education system has collapsed, key cultural heritage sites have been damaged, and 264 journalists have lost their lives.”
The statement stressed the need to increase international efforts to alleviate the hardships faced by the Palestinian people in Gaza and expressed gratitude to supporting countries and UNESCO leadership.
