US vetoes Palestinian bid for full UN membership
New York, April 19 (Hibya) - The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) rejected Palestine's bid to join the UN as a full member due to a US veto.
The Council did not adopt a draft resolution recommending the UN General Assembly to hold a broader vote on Palestine's full membership in the UN as a full-fledged state, with 12 votes in favour, one against, and two abstentions.
For a draft resolution to pass, at least nine Council members must vote in favour, and none of the permanent members (China, France, Russia, United Kingdom, US) must use veto power.
