WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus stated that the need for interventions against trachoma, one of the leading causes of infectious blindness worldwide, declined by 94% between 2002 and 2025.

Noting that a total of 27 countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Oceania have eliminated trachoma as a public health problem, Ghebreyesus said, “This progress was made possible thanks to the WHO-supported SAFE strategy. Science, solidarity, and sustainable action can end diseases.”

Emphasizing the significant progress achieved under the Global Alliance for the Elimination of Trachoma launched by WHO in 1996, Ghebreyesus added, “Together, we will continue moving toward a world free of trachoma.”
