Immigration officer tried to enter Ecuador’s consulate in Minneapolis
Washington, 28 January (Hibya) – Ecuador’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Tuesday that a U.S. immigration officer, an ICE agent, attempted to forcibly enter Ecuador’s consulate in Minneapolis.
Under international law, federal agents are generally not permitted to enter an embassy or consulate without the consent of the consul or ambassador.
The ministry stated that consulate staff prevented the officer from entering the building and activated emergency protocols.
According to the statement, a note of protest was “immediately” submitted to the U.S. Embassy in Ecuador to prevent similar actions from being repeated at any office in the country.
The incident occurred amid rising tensions in Minnesota this month following the fatal shooting of Minneapolis residents Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good by federal agents.
The Department of Homeland Security and ICE have not yet responded to requests for comment.
