Iranian president wants to ease tensions with the US
Stockholm, Feb. 4 (Hibya) – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said he has instructed the country’s foreign minister to pursue constructive negotiations with the United States to reduce tensions and the threat of an impending conflict.
This marks the first clear sign that Tehran is seeking negotiations while tensions with Washington remain high.
Tensions between the two countries escalated after US President Donald Trump threatened military intervention against Iran amid the government’s crackdown on protesters during large anti-government demonstrations.
The statement came after a US Navy fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone early Tuesday that was approaching a US aircraft carrier in the region. The US also said Iran’s fast boats attempted to stop a US-flagged vessel in the Strait of Hormuz; Iran did not immediately confirm the incidents.
The developments strained hopes for talks between Iran and the US but did not completely derail them. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Tuesday that US President Donald Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, plans to meet Iranian officials in Turkey later this week.
