European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated at the Munich Security Conference that the world is going through a turbulent period.

“We are going through a turbulent time. That is why the Munich Security Conference is more important than ever,” von der Leyen said.

Noting that 2025 was the year when old certainties disappeared, von der Leyen added: “2025 was the year when old assumptions collapsed. 2026 will be the year of facing reality.”

Pointing out that Europe must act more independently in the field of security, von der Leyen said: “I am here today to speak about Europe’s moment of independence. We are ready to take greater responsibility for our own security.”
