French President Emmanuel Macron announced that French Polynesia has become an example by deciding to create one of the largest marine protected areas in the world.

Macron said, "Ahead of the Nice Ocean Conference, French Polynesia is setting an example with its decision to create one of the largest marine protected areas in the world; this area will be a sacred sanctuary for whales, dolphins, rays, sharks, and thousands of marine species. It is a strong step, an important direction for the planet, and a commitment from all Polynesians. I welcome this historic decision, which marks a turning point in the protection of the Pacific Ocean and in France’s commitment to biodiversity."
