Meloni: The right to demonstrate and security in cities must be guaranteed together
Rome, October 24 (Hibya) - Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized the need to protect citizens' right to demonstrate peacefully while ensuring security in cities, defending new measures aimed at preventing violence.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni thanked law enforcement officers working to protect citizens' safety and their right to peaceful protest during demonstrations across the country in a statement shared on social media.
Meloni expressed her gratitude to the security forces, who continued carrying out their duties despite attempts by some violent individuals to provoke clashes and disorder. She also thanked Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, prefects, police chiefs and those responsible for coordinating public order.
Emphasizing that the right to demonstrate peacefully must always be guaranteed, Meloni stated that citizens' right to live safely in their cities must also be protected.
Meloni said the measures approved by the Council of Ministers in the preceding days were consistent with this approach. She noted that the measures aimed to provide the state with more effective tools to prevent violence and stop criminals and provocateurs from causing disorder in cities.
Meloni stated that security must be guaranteed for everyone, including those wishing to demonstrate peacefully, people going to work and those who want to live in their cities without fear. She added that no room should be left for those seeking confrontation and violence.
