National conversion conference held in Jerusalem
Jerusalem, May 21 (Hibya) - According to a statement by the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office, ahead of the Shavuot holiday, the Prime Minister’s Office Conversion Authority organized a national conversion conference in Jerusalem’s Old City under the slogan “An Eternal Nation - One Nation”.
Approximately one thousand people who had converted or are currently in the middle of the conversion process from across the country attended the event, which was also attended by Israel’s Sephardic Chief Rabbi. It was stated that the aim of the conference was to bring together many converts and boost the morale of those at various stages of their conversion journey.
The Prime Minister’s Office Conversion Authority, which is responsible for managing the official conversion processes in the State of Israel, serves as the official and central body making the process accessible for those wishing to join the Jewish people within the halachic and state framework.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that state conversion is a national mission that touches the core of identity and the future of the State of Israel as a Jewish state.
Recalling that the Book of Ruth is read during the Shavuot holiday, Netanyahu said that Ruth, who voluntarily chose Judaism, told Naomi: “Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.”
Netanyahu noted that those choosing to belong to the Jewish people through the Prime Minister’s Office Conversion Authority seek to join those who had done so before them; he added that these individuals come from every part of Israel’s social mosaic, including new immigrants from various countries, veteran immigrants, native Israelis, young people, the elderly, soldiers, civilians, and residents of the periphery, north, south, and center.
