Netherlands emphasizes Korean Peninsula and global security
Amsterdam, 11 February (Hibya) - Dutch Foreign Minister David van Weel announced that during his visit to South Korea, they discussed deterrence, economic security, and North Korea–Russia military cooperation.
Foreign Minister van Weel highlighted that the Netherlands contributed to the United Nations (UN) Command in 1950, and this contribution continues to this day. He emphasized that despite more than 70 years passing since the signing of the ceasefire, vigilance remains important on the Korean Peninsula.
Van Weel met with U.S. Forces Korea Commander General Xavier Brunson to discuss deterrence, the role of the UN Command, and the increasing intersection of security between Asia and Europe.
Highlighting the growing overlap of foreign policy and trade, van Weel, along with Dutch official Stas BHO, held talks with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun and relevant Minister Yeo Han-koo on economic security, technology, and supply chains. They discussed the importance of cooperation in enhancing resilience in response to the changing global economy.
Van Weel emphasized that the strategic partnership between the Netherlands and South Korea has become even more important in uncertain times, and they evaluated common challenges and solutions in the rapidly changing geopolitical environment.
In his statement, van Weel expressed serious concerns over military cooperation between North Korea (DPRK) and Russia, and North Korea's support for Russia's war in Ukraine, reiterating the Netherlands' commitment to a stable and nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.
