Palestine supports joint statement by African Union, OIC and Arab League
Ramallah, November 5 (Hibya) – The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates welcomed the joint communiqué issued following a consultative meeting between the African Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League to assess developments concerning the Palestinian issue.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also supported the call for countries that have moved their diplomatic missions to occupied Jerusalem, or announced their intention to do so, to reverse these unlawful decisions. The ministry stated that steps violating relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and reinforcing Israel's occupation or illegal annexation attempts must be avoided. The joint communiqué also emphasized the need to end Israel's colonial occupation and implement the two-state solution on the basis of international law, relevant UN resolutions, the Arab Peace Initiative and the 2025 New York Declaration. In this context, it called for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian State within the June 4, 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as its capital, and for guarantees of the Palestinian people's rights to self-determination, independence and return, as well as compensation for refugees.
The communiqué reportedly rejected Israeli settlement activities and called for the dismantling of settlements, accountability for settlers responsible for acts of violence and terrorism against Palestinians, their land, property and holy sites, and the disarmament of those settlers. It also called for necessary legal and economic measures against companies involved in illegal settlement activities. Other prominent issues included protecting Palestinian detainees, condemning allegations of enforced disappearance, extrajudicial executions, ill-treatment and torture, holding those responsible for these violations accountable before national and international courts, and providing international protection for the Palestinian people.
The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also welcomed calls to support the Palestinian government in fulfilling its responsibilities throughout all occupied Palestinian territories, including Gaza, to release withheld Palestinian tax revenues, and to preserve and support the mandate of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). It also positively assessed the proposal to place the archaeological site of Sebastia on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Emphasizing the importance of the call for all countries to recognize the State of Palestine and support Palestine's full membership in the United Nations, the ministry urged the activation of the tripartite coordination mechanism between the African Union, the OIC and the Arab League, and called for joint positions to be translated into concrete political, legal and diplomatic steps toward ending the Israeli occupation and guaranteeing the rights of the Palestinian people.
