US Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented on political developments in Nicaragua and said the United States would take new steps against the Nicaraguan government.

Rubio argued that the National Assembly aligned with the Murillo-Ortega administration had, for the second time, eliminated the remaining elements of Nicaraguan democracy as part of the process of rewriting the constitution.

Rubio said the US would take measures against Nicaragua at the next Organization of American States (OAS) Foreign Ministers Meeting.

Rubio said the measures are intended to bring an end to countries in the Western Hemisphere continuing “business as usual” with the Nicaraguan government.
