Russian drones plunged parts of Ukraine into darkness
Stockholm, October 22 (Hibya) — As temperatures drop in Ukraine, Russia has intensified drone strikes on electrical facilities that supply power to millions of homes nationwide.
There are signs the Russian military is hitting the same areas repeatedly. The northern regions of Chernihiv and Sumy, bordering Russia and Belarus, have faced relentless attacks for the past month.
On Tuesday in Chernihiv, more than 50 drones and missiles targeted critical infrastructure, leaving hundreds of thousands without electricity and water. According to Vyacheslav Chaus, head of the regional military administration, two attack drones struck a heating plant and another energy facility.
According to the regional energy company, Russia has targeted Chernihiv’s energy infrastructure on 15 days over the past month.
A major Russian strike on power facilities in many regions, including Kyiv, also occurred on October 10.
Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said Tuesday: “The Russians deliberately launch drones that continuously circle over the damaged facilities, making safe operations impossible and intentionally prolonging the humanitarian crisis.”
Russia has developed a range of drones and missiles that sometimes evade Ukraine’s air defenses. In Sumy, adjacent to Chernihiv, power has still not been fully restored in the city of Shostka and nearby areas following attacks two weeks ago.
Following the latest attacks, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha urged allies “to urgently mobilize additional assistance—from energy equipment and resources to air defense capabilities—to bolster Ukraine’s resilience.”
Later on Tuesday, Ukrainian officials claimed Ukraine had struck Russia’s Bryansk Chemical Plant, which produces gunpowder and other explosives, with long-range Storm Shadow missiles.
