Türk: Iran must halt the use of the death penalty
New York, Aug. 5 (Hibya) – United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said that at least 56 people have been executed in Iran since March 19 on national security-related charges, expressing deep concern over the continuing shortcomings regarding fair trial standards and legal safeguards.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk issued a statement regarding executions carried out in Iran since March 19 under national security-related charges. Noting that at least 56 people had been executed, Türk expressed concern over the lack of fair trial guarantees and legal safeguards.
Türk said: "Since March 19, at least 56 people have been executed on national security-related charges. I am deeply concerned by the continuing shortcomings regarding fair trial standards and legal safeguards."
Calling on the Iranian authorities, Türk said: "I urge the authorities to halt the use of the death penalty and take steps toward its complete abolition."
