US to deny visas to Palestinian Authority and PLO members
Washington, July 31 (Hibya) – The US State Department announced that it will impose sanctions on members of the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), stating it will not issue them visas.
The statement accused Palestinian officials of "taking steps to internationalize the conflict with Israel through tools such as the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ)."
It further stated that the United States will not grant visas to PLO members and Palestinian Authority officials, adding: "Imposing sanctions and holding them accountable for failing to meet commitments and undermining hopes for peace is in our national security interest."
These sanctions come as a growing number of countries consider recognizing the State of Palestine.
Canada and France are the latest nations to announce they will recognize Palestine at the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York in September.
This US move is seen as an attempt to hinder Palestinian leaders' participation in the meeting.
