Volker Türk: States must prevent and punish this horrific atrocity crime
New York, April 7 (Hibya) - United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk issued a message marking the anniversary of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk commemorated the victims of the genocide in Rwanda and pointed to the dangers in the lead-up to it.
Recalling the scale of the loss of life, Türk said: "Today we remember the victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda – more than 1 million people were killed in 100 days".
Warning about the social signs preceding genocide, Türk stated: "There are warning signs of genocide: deep discrimination, dehumanization, incitement to hatred".
Volker Türk concluded his call to the international community and states by saying: "States must prevent and punish this horrific atrocity crime".
