Volker Türk: We owe them our deepest respect for their sacrifices
Seoul, May 14 (Hibya) - United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk visited the Gwangju Cemetery in memory of those who lost their lives during the 1980 uprising in South Korea.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk made remarks following the visit organized to commemorate those who lost their lives in the resistance against military rule in South Korea.
Expressing the impact the visit had on him, Türk said, “Visiting the Gwangju Cemetery to honor those who lost their lives during the 1980 uprising against military rule in South Korea deeply moved me.”
Highlighting the global dimension of the struggle for freedom, Türk stated, “We owe them our deepest respect for their sacrifices; that sacrifice is part of the worldwide struggle for rights and freedoms.”
