European Parliament condemns Iran’s repression of protesters
Brussels, January 26 (Hibya) – The European Parliament reacted to the repression and mass killings carried out by the Iranian regime against protesters in the country.
The European Parliament unconditionally demanded that Iranian authorities immediately end violence against peaceful protesters, halt all executions, and put an end to the killing and repression of civilians. Expressing full solidarity with the Iranian people and their brave and legitimate protest movement, the Parliament strongly condemned the widespread, deliberate, and disproportionate use of force by security forces.
Members of Parliament called for the immediate and unconditional release of all detained protesters, human rights defenders, and journalists.
The Parliament also urged the EU to act without delay to designate the entire Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization.
While calling for intensified diplomatic efforts, including strengthening the EU’s presence in the region to provide protection, humanitarian aid, and support to individuals at risk, members emphasized that Iran remains the largest and most significant threat to the region’s overall security and stability and the main obstacle to peace.
Finally, the Parliament stressed that normalization of relations with Iran would only be possible after the unconditional release of political prisoners and genuine progress toward democracy and the rule of law, welcoming President Roberta Metsola’s decision to ban Iranian regime representatives from entering European Parliament buildings and calling on Member States to follow suit.
