Europe’s joint response to Trump’s tariffs
Brussels, January 19 (Hibya) – In response to the latest customs duties announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, eight European countries affected by the tariffs issued a joint statement on Sunday, declaring “full solidarity” with Denmark and Greenland.
U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of new tariffs targeting eight European countries on the grounds of the Denmark and Greenland issue prompted a joint response from Europe.
In the joint statement issued by Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, the countries said they stand in full solidarity with Denmark and Greenland. The statement warned that U.S. tariffs damage transatlantic relations and could lead to a dangerous setback in cooperation between the two continents.
The eight countries emphasized that they are open to dialogue based on the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, and noted that they would act “united and coordinated” in response to U.S. decisions.
Trump had announced that a 10 percent customs duty would be applied to products coming from Europe as of February 1, rising to 25 percent on June 1. It was stated that the tariffs would remain in force until an agreement is reached on the U.S. purchase of Greenland.
