Famine crisis alarm in Somalia
Mogadishu, February 20 (Hibya) - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced that millions of people in Somalia are at risk of severe hunger. The agency warned that without urgent funding, food and nutrition assistance could halt within weeks.
Somalia is facing one of its most serious hunger crises in recent years due to two consecutive failed rainy seasons, conflict and declining humanitarian funding. Around 4.4 million people are experiencing crisis-level food insecurity, with nearly 1 million struggling with severe hunger.
WFP Director of Emergency Preparedness and Response Ross Smith said, “Families have lost everything and many are on the brink of survival. Without urgent food assistance, conditions will rapidly deteriorate.”
Due to the current funding gap, the organization has been forced to reduce the number of people receiving aid from 2.2 million to 600,000. Nutrition programs have also been significantly scaled back. WFP needs $95 million in urgent funding to sustain assistance from March to August 2026.
Smith added, “If assistance stops, the humanitarian, security and economic consequences will be devastating. Urgent support is essential to prevent a preventable catastrophe.”
