UN Secretary-General Guterres emphasized that the UN Charter is the foundation of international relations and the cornerstone of peace, sustainable development and human rights.

Noting that leaders undermine the global order and create a dangerous precedent when they disregard international law and choose which rules to follow, Guterres said: “When a handful of individuals can change global narratives, influence elections or dictate the terms of public debate, we are facing inequality and the erosion of our institutions and shared values.”

Stressing that the UN Charter is a contract binding everyone, Guterres underlined: “All countries must comply with it fully and in good faith.”
