Lazzarini: International aid operations continue in the Gaza Strip
New York, February 5 (Hibya) – Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), said that the allegations against the agency are part of a disinformation campaign.
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini made a statement regarding the smear campaigns carried out against the agency during the war in Gaza.
Emphasizing that a strategy aimed at eliminating UNRWA is being pursued, Lazzarini said: “Disinformation against UNRWA has been used as a weapon as part of an ongoing campaign to discredit and dismantle the main UN agency assisting Palestinian refugees. The latest allegation, based on video footage released by the Israeli army showing ammunition next to empty flour sacks bearing the UNRWA logo, once again failed to provide verifiable evidence.”
Recalling that due to the harsh living conditions in Gaza, empty aid materials are used for various purposes, Lazzarini stated: “International aid operations in the Gaza Strip have been ongoing for years. After food is distributed to those in need, the bags are reused for all kinds of purposes because people have nothing else.”
Lazzarini concluded his remarks by saying: “In 2024 alone, UNRWA distributed approximately 3 million intact 25-kilogram flour sacks. Empty sacks are everywhere in Gaza.”
