Lazzarini on Gaza: No more time to lose
New York, August 2 (Hibya) – Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), stated that there is no more time to lose regarding Gaza, and that a political decision must be made to open crossings unconditionally.
Lazzarini explained that the man-made famine in Gaza stems largely from deliberate efforts to replace the UN’s coordinated humanitarian system with the politically driven "GHF".
He described this as a “so-called aid system” responsible for the deaths of approximately 1,499 starving people, adding: “Everything worsened when UNRWA, the backbone of humanitarian aid, was blocked from delivering any assistance to Gaza for five months (since March 2).”
Lazzarini stressed that sidelining and weakening UNRWA has nothing to do with claims that aid is being diverted to armed groups, and said:
“This is a deliberate measure to collectively pressure and punish Palestinians for living in Gaza. There is no more time to waste – a political decision must be taken to open the crossings unconditionally. UNRWA has the expertise, staff, and resources to fully respond to the famine and reverse this crisis.”
