Macron: The high seas will no longer be a ‘Wild West’ open to plunder
Paris, January 17 (Hibya) – French President Emmanuel Macron said that the high seas will no longer be a ‘Wild West’ open to plunder and that the seas have become an area of shared responsibility.
French President Macron announced today that the international agreement aimed at protecting the high seas and marine biodiversity has entered into force.
Stating that this development is a major victory for the oceans, life and humanity, Macron said: “The high seas will no longer be a ‘Wild West’ open to plunder; they are becoming an area of shared responsibility.”
Macron noted that the process, which began in 2024 with eight countries, reached 60 states that made commitments at the Nice Ocean Summit in 2025, and has now expanded to 83 countries.
Emphasizing that the international community has kept its promise, Macron said:
“Together, we are creating the conditions to protect 30 percent of seas and oceans by 2030. This corresponds to more than half of our planet’s total surface. This achievement is the result of the extraordinary collective effort of negotiators, scientists and citizens who believe that the future must be built together. I thank them.”
Macron added: “This is the choice of responsibility over indifference, cooperation over inward-looking isolation, and the dignity of humanity in the face of global disorder.”
