Travel ban declared in New York due to powerful winter storm in the US
New York, 23 February (Hibya) - A historic winter storm has begun hitting the northeastern United States (US), placing 59 million people under weather warnings and causing power outages and a travel ban in New York.
A state of emergency has been declared in several US states, including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Delaware, New Jersey and Rhode Island. Many have imposed travel restrictions or bans due to the snowstorm, and thousands of flights have been canceled.
Forecasters say much of the northeastern US and Canada’s Maritimes region will be affected from Sunday evening into Monday.
Approximately 40 million people are under blizzard warnings, while 19 million people are under winter storm warnings stretching from central Appalachia to the coast of Maine.
Already, more than 20,000 people in New Jersey are without power. According to the tracking site PowerOutage.us, thousands are also without electricity in Virginia, Delaware and Maryland.
According to flight-tracking site FlightAware, about 3,900 US flights were canceled on Sunday, and hundreds more were delayed.
New York City, the most populous city in the US, is under a blizzard warning for the first time in nine years. The city is expected to be particularly hard hit, with 0.5 to 0.6 meters of snow forecast in the metropolitan area and temperatures dropping to around -6 degrees Celsius.
A full travel ban is in effect in New York City from 9:00 p.m. local time on Sunday until 12:00 p.m. local time on Monday. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said schools will be closed and all streets, highways and bridges will be shut to traffic except for emergencies.
