UNRWA: Growing garbage and waste in Gaza increase disease risks
Gaza, June 3 (Hibya) - The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) stated that accumulating garbage and overflowing sewage in Gaza are threatening public health, noting that teams are working to prevent the spread of diseases, but shortages of fuel and medical supplies are complicating the response.
UNRWA announced that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is steadily worsening. Assessments indicated that garbage is piling up and sewage is overflowing in the area, posing a serious threat to public health.
The statement noted that UNRWA’s health, sanitation, and shelter teams are working in the field every day, particularly to prevent the spread of diseases that may be caused by rodents and parasites such as lice, fleas, mites, and bedbugs.
However, the agency stressed that shortages of fuel, tents, and medicines are severely hampering these interventions, adding: “The lack of resources limits our teams’ response capacity.”
UNRWA emphasized that humanitarian aid must reach the region on a broader and uninterrupted scale, stating: “UNRWA is working and can do much more if aid and supplies are allowed to enter at scale.”
