Von der Leyen and Costa meet with Zelensky in Cyprus
Nicosia, January 7 (Hibya) – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss Ukraine’s EU membership and security guarantees.
European Commission President Von der Leyen met with Ukrainian President Zelensky today in Nicosia. Von der Leyen said, “The agreement reached yesterday on security guarantees is an important step towards a just and lasting peace for Ukraine. Ukraine’s membership in the European Union is itself a vital security guarantee. This is a proven path to a more prosperous and stable future for the country. Our work is advancing rapidly.”

Costa noted that Cyprus assumes the Presidency of the EU Council at a critical time and expressed eagerness to work with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides to build a safer, more prosperous, more active, and more united Europe. Costa highlighted that this goal is fully aligned with Cyprus's vision of an “open, autonomous Union.”
