WHO: Health services are not a target
Geneva, October 29 (Hibya) – The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in the city of El Fasher in Sudan’s Darfur region.
In its statement, the WHO noted that civilians are trapped between warring parties, completely cut off from humanitarian aid, and facing critical shortages of food, clean water, and access to healthcare.
The organization reported that a nurse was killed and three health workers were injured in an attack on the Saudi Maternity Hospital on Sunday. On Monday, reports emerged of the abduction of four doctors, a nurse, and a pharmacist.
The WHO called for the immediate release of the health workers, the protection of health facilities, safe passage for humanitarian aid, and an urgent ceasefire in Darfur and Sudan as a whole.
The statement emphasized in particular: “Health services are not a target.”
