On the occasion of World Ozone Day, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment organized a meeting in Beijing, where information was shared about China’s achievements under the Montreal Protocol.
It was noted that since joining the protocol in 1991, over the past 34 years, China has implemented economic, technological, legal, and administrative measures to eliminate ozone-depleting substances, guiding relevant sectors toward a green and low-carbon transition.
So far, approximately 628,000 tons of ozone-depleting substances have been eliminated in China, accounting for more than half of the total of developing countries, and preventing the emission of 26 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gases.
Tina Birmpili, Executive Secretary of the Multilateral Fund for the Montreal Protocol, stated in her speech that China’s leadership in phasing out ozone-depleting chemicals and reducing hydrofluorocarbons that cause climate change is crucial to achieving the goals of the Montreal Protocol.
It was reported that to date, 99% of ozone-depleting substances worldwide have been eliminated and that the ozone hole over Antarctica continues to shrink.
