Landslide fear in Norway
Oslo, July 15 (Hibya) – Norwegian geologists are closely monitoring Mount Skarfjellet, located near a popular hiking area in the town of Innerdalen. In recent days, unusual movement has been detected in the mountain soil, raising concerns that a landslide may be triggered.
Hikers are being asked to stay away from the area.
In 2019, a major landslide occurred on Mount Mannen in Romsdal.
Geologists fear that a potential landslide from Skarfjellet could be even larger.
On Monday, the mountain moved at least 15 millimeters within an hour. The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) describes the movement as very large or extremely large.
On Tuesday morning, NVE duty geologist Kjetil Indrevær confirmed that they are closely monitoring the situation at Skarfjellet. "To keep the situation under control. When we observe such high activity, we want to protect ourselves in case of a major collapse," he said.
