Lazzarini: Child malnutrition in Gaza has tripled
New York, August 20 (Hibya) – Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of UNRWA (the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees), said that in less than six months child malnutrition across the Gaza Strip has tripled.
Lazzarini noted that new data from UNRWA clinics is alarming, adding that since March nearly 100,000 children under the age of five have been screened by the agency.
He stressed that in less than six months child malnutrition in Gaza has tripled: “In Gaza City, one in three children is malnourished – a sixfold increase compared to the period before the collapse of the ceasefire. This is not a natural disaster. This is a man-made and preventable starvation policy.”
Lazzarini said that UNRWA and other humanitarian aid organizations have not been able to bring in supplies for nearly six months, and added:
“Once again, we call: allow life-saving aid to enter through UNRWA and other humanitarian organizations. Otherwise, more children will continue to die. The only thing needed to reverse this atrocity is political will.”
