Sweden wants to revoke the citizenship of gang leaders
Stockholm, December 6 (Hibya) – The government is taking the next step toward being able to revoke the citizenship of gang criminals. It is proposed that individuals convicted of crimes that seriously harm Sweden’s “vital interests” should lose their Swedish citizenship.
Today, the revocation of Swedish citizenship is not possible. However, the government wants revocation to be possible for individuals with dual citizenship. The police estimate that around 1,400 dual citizens are active in gangs.
This should be possible if a person has obtained citizenship through fraud or threats, and if the person is convicted of crimes that seriously harm Sweden’s “vital interests.”
Examples include armed attacks and bombings, as well as other serious violent crimes that “threaten the ability of society to maintain public order and safety” in an urban area.

The bill also includes proposals to restrict the freedom of organization for criminal groups. This aims to make participation in criminal gangs a punishable offense. According to Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer, this may also apply to extremist groups such as far-right activist clubs that promote violence.
The bill is based on recommendations submitted by the Constitutional Committee in January 2025. At that time, all parties except the Left Party and the Green Party supported allowing the revocation of citizenship for those who committed fraud, threatened fraud, or were convicted of crimes that seriously threatened national security.
