Syrian Defense Minister announces ceasefire in Druze-majority Suwayda
Stockholm, July 15 (Hibya) – After Syrian authorities reported that army troops had entered the city of Suwayda, where recent clashes between Druze and Bedouins resulted in dozens of deaths, the Syrian Defense Minister announced a ceasefire between the parties.
Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Kasra wrote on X: "We declare a full ceasefire for all units operating in the city of Suwayda, following an agreement reached with the city's elders and dignitaries."
Since the morning of Sunday, July 13, the number of people killed in armed clashes and artillery shelling across Suwayda province has reached 100, including two women and two children.
The clashes followed mutual arrests between local armed individuals and tribal members. A group of tribal members stopped a young man near the El-Mesamiye checkpoint, beat him brutally, stole his money, phone, and car, and later released him in a remote area.
In response, Suwayda residents detained several tribal individuals. The situation escalated further this morning when tribal members set up a temporary checkpoint in the eastern El-Mukaves neighborhood and began detaining civilians from Suwayda.
