At a press conference organized by the State Council Information Office of China, progress in science and technology during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021–2025) was reviewed.
According to the announcement, during this period research and development (R&D) investments have continuously increased. Total nationwide R&D spending in 2024 exceeded 3.6 trillion yuan. This figure represents a 48% increase compared to 2020, while the share of R&D expenditure in GDP rose to 2.68%, surpassing the European Union average. China also became the global leader in the number of R&D personnel.
Funding allocated to basic research rose to 249.7 billion yuan, marking an increase of over 70% compared to 2020. In addition, China has maintained its global leadership for five consecutive years in both the number of articles published in high-impact journals and international patent applications.
