Orban calls for sanctions on Ukrainians over Hungarian citizen's death
Stockholm, July 17 (Hibya) – Hungary is urging the European Union to impose sanctions on Ukrainian military commanders over the death of a Hungarian citizen who was allegedly beaten to death during military service. Ukraine denies the allegation of killing.
The Hungarian government has requested that the European Union impose economic sanctions on Ukrainian officials over the death of a Hungarian citizen who was being conscripted into the Ukrainian army. Hungary accuses Ukrainian soldiers of beating Jozsef Sebestyen to death for refusing military service.
Orban wrote on his Facebook page: “The Hungarian government has initiated efforts to include the Ukrainian leaders responsible for the death of Jozsef Sebestyen on the EU’s sanctions list for human rights violations.”
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced at Tuesday’s EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels that Hungary would officially propose economic sanctions against the Ukrainian military officials responsible for Sebestyen’s death.
The Hungarian news agency Mandiner reported that earlier this month, Sebestyen’s brothers were told that draft office officials had taken him with other men to a forest and beaten him with iron pipes. They threatened to send him directly to the front line if he did not sign a document they gave him.
Orban wrote on Facebook: “A Hungarian citizen was beaten to death in Ukraine. Just a few kilometers from Hungary’s border. A country where this can happen should not be a member of the EU.”
