Rubio calls for direct US-Iran negotiations
Washington, June 22 (Hibya) - US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called for direct negotiations between the United States and Iran.
According to CNN, Rubio made the call following military strikes, urging direct talks between the US and Iran.
Reiterating that Iran may have a civilian nuclear program but should not have uranium enrichment capabilities, Rubio said: “The Iranian regime must wake up and say, ‘Okay, if we truly want nuclear energy in our country, there’s a way to do it.’ That offer is still on the table. We are ready to talk to them and begin working on it tomorrow. Steve Witkoff traveled the world to reach this deal with them, but they played too many games. Now they’ve learned.”
Rubio added that Iran rejected the US offer, did not respond to proposals, and "disappeared for 10 days" before the military operation: “They want to send notes and messages like we’re in third grade. We’re not doing that anymore. Direct negotiations. Let’s talk about how to resolve this peacefully. The Europeans have applied pressure at this point, and we’re encouraging them to keep doing so, and we’re grateful for what they’ve done so far.”
He also stated: “If what they want is nuclear reactors to generate electricity, many countries have them and don’t enrich their own uranium — it can be done.”
