Trump Wants Real Cane Sugar in American Coca-Cola
Washington, July 17 (Hibya) - U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday on Truth Social that he had contacted Coca-Cola executives and that they agreed to produce the country’s top-selling soda domestically using real cane sugar, as is done south of the border.
Trump said, “I spoke with Coca-Cola about using real cane sugar in colas in the United States, and they agreed. I want to thank all the officials at Coca-Cola.”
Although the president is famously known for drinking Diet Coke made with aspartame, Trump personally endorsed the product. “This will be a great move for them – you’ll see. Even better!” he wrote.
Coca-Cola did not confirm any details, but said in a statement Wednesday that any change is still under consideration. The company stated, “We appreciate President Trump’s enthusiasm for our iconic Coca-Cola brand. More details on new and innovative products in our lineup will be shared soon.”
The move carried classic Trump hallmarks: pressuring a private company to bend to his will and announcing changes with hype rather than details. It also follows the path set by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who champions the “Make America Healthy Again” agenda, urging food companies to remove artificial dyes and additives from their products.
A report published in May by the “MAHA Commission” noted that high-fructose corn syrup is a factor in obesity and related illnesses. Scientists say there is little nutritional difference between sugar and high-fructose corn syrup.
Coca-Cola began using high-fructose corn syrup in its flagship cola in the mid-1980s, after federal subsidies helped lower the price of corn in the U.S.
