Dmitry Peskov: The 2014 Kiev coup heralded the conflict in Ukraine
Moscow, June 22 (Hibya) – Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in an interview published on the Rossiya 1 host Pavel Zarubin’s Telegram channel that the 2014 coup in Kiev signalled the entire situation surrounding Ukraine.
Responding to a question about why President Vladimir Putin frequently refers to the Kiev coup, Peskov said: “It was the herald of everything, the herald of the whole situation. It actually began when the legitimate leadership of Ukraine was interrupted.”
Peskov added: “The Russian side and President Putin are not ready to change anything. We must address the root causes. That (the coup) is one of them.”
He noted that Western countries abandoned their commitments to Ukraine in 2014: “Later, as confirmed by the US and acknowledged by Nuland, they spent about four billion dollars to organise the coup.”
Victoria Nuland was US State Department spokesperson from 2021 to 2024.
Peskov continued:
“As the president stated on Friday, Moscow’s actions in Ukraine after the coup were aimed at protecting the population spiritually tied to Russia.”
The president also spoke the previous day about resolving the conflict: Kiev must recognise the results of referendums in the four new regions; Ukraine must declare neutrality, not arm with nuclear weapons, and not join alliances; the rights of Russian‐speaking and pro‐Russian residents must be guaranteed.
Furthermore, there must be no Nazi elements in Ukraine’s leadership.
